Using Desktop Reset
-------------------
Desktop Reset™ allows you to reset (delete) the desktop files on your disks at boot time. By doing this, you force the Finder to rebuild the desktop from scratch. Forcing the Finder to rebuild the desktop from scratch should result in a good rebuild. By comparison, using the Finder's standard way of rebuilding the desktop often results in a screwy desktop, especially if the desktop file was damaged.
Desktop Reset can be used to correct the corrupted desktop sometimes seen under System 7.
Just before the Desktop Reset INIT loads, hold down the option and cmd keys (just as for the Finder). Desktop Reset will prompt you for each volume; you can skip or reset each volume independently. You need hold the keys down only until Desktop Reset starts prompting you.
You should see the following alert:
If DeskTop Reset was successfull, then you will see this alert:
WARNING TO MAXIMA USERS:
Holding down the option and cmd keys causes the maxima RAM disk to be erased. Hold down these keys only after Maxima says the RAM disk has been remounted.
Desktop Reset works under both System 6.0.x and System 7.0.x. It allocates no memory and patches no traps, so it is highly unlikely that it will cause any kind of incompatibility. In fact, unless you hold down the option and cmd keys, Desktop Reset does nothing at all.
NOTE FOR SYSTEM 6 USERS:
• Sometimes the Finder finishes the rebuild with the alert:
"The desktop file could not be completely rebuilt (out of Finder memory)."
This message occurs because the Finder ran out of memory while rebuilding the desktop. The solution is simple: turn off MultiFinder (using the Set Startup... command), reboot, and tell Desktop Reset to reset the desired volumes again. Then you can turn MultiFinder back on.
• We recommend increasing the Finder's memory partitition to 250K or more. To do this, select the Finder itself, and use the Finder's Get Info command. Change the Finder's memory allocation to 250K. Close the Get Info window, then restart your Macintosh.
• Desktop Reset occassionally crashes on a MacPlus or SE under System 6.0.x due to a system bug. We are working on a fix.
